CSE Alumni Amit P. Sheth Elected IEEE Fellow


The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) has elected CSE Alumni Amit P. Sheth, (Ph.D.’85) to the rank of IEEE Fellow in the 2006 Class. The IEEE Board of Directors confers this award upon people who have an extraordinary record of accomplishments. Dr. Sheth received this distinction for his contributions to information integration, workflow management and the Semantic Web. Dr. Sheth is among a handful of our graduates so far to receive such a high honor and international recognition.

Sheth has led a diverse career mixing both academia and industry. Currently a Full Professor of Computer Science at University of Georgia, he also holds the position of CTO at Semagix, Inc. (formerly Voquette) which he also co-founded. Immediately preceding those positions, from 1999 to 2001, Dr. Sheth was CEO, President and Founder of Taalee, Inc. Before joining the University of Georgia, Amit worked for Honeywell (1985 – 1987), Unisys (1987 -1989), and Bellcore (1989 – 1994)

Amit’s time at The Ohio State University Department of Computer Science & Engineering (then Computer & Information Science) was a highly productive one. After receiving his Master Degree in Computer and Information Science in 1983, he continued and obtained his PhD Degree in 1985 writing his dissertation is “Adaptive Concurrency Control for Distributed Database Systems” under the supervision of Professor Ming T. (Mike) Liu. Amit is Mike’s 23rd Ph.D. among his 55 Ph.D. graduates. Amit also holds a Bachelor Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology and Science (Pilani, India) in 1981,

The IEEE Fellow award is a very elite selection. The total number selected in any one year does not exceed one-tenth percent of the total voting Institute membership. The award has a history going back to 1912. The full details of it's long life may be found at IEEE's Fellow page.
