CSE Alum in IEEE 2010 Fellow Class

CSE is very happy to hear the news Dr. Ahmed K. Elmagarmid has been named an IEEE Fellow. IEEE bestowed this honor for his contributions to data integration and quality and transaction management. Dr. Elmagarmid joins a very select group of ten other OSU-CSE alums and CSE faculty members.

Professor Elmagarmid is a true Buckeye receiving both his Masters (ˊ81) and PhD (ˊ85) after getting his Bachelors of Science from the University of Dayton in 1977. He remains in the Big Ten at Purdue University where he serves as the director of the Indiana Center for Database Systems and the Cyber Center in Discovery Park. He received a Presidential Young Investigator award from the National Science Foundation, and distinguished alumni awards from Ohio State University and the University of Dayton in 1993 and 1995, respectively.

Ahmed's research interests are broad including a large spectrum of foundational and application-oriented database research. He has done work in video databases, data quality and confidentiality, data integration, web service, bioinformatics and multidatabase systems. Professor Elmagarmid has written six books and more than 150 papers. He has several active grants from state and federal government agencies and the industry.

Professor Elmagarmid is the editor-in-chief of Distributed and Parallel Databases: An International Journal. He has also been on the editorial board of the Information Sciences Journal, the International Journal of Communication Systems, and the editor of the book series on Advances in Database Systems. He has chaired and served on several program committees and served on several editorial boards.

According to their website, IEEE honors accomplishments that have contributed importantly to the advancement or application of engineering, science, and technology, bringing the realization of significant value to society. The IEEE Fellows are an elite group from around the globe. They are looked to for guidance and leadership as the world of electrical and electronic technology continues to evolve. Every year only 0.1% of the IEEE members are elected Fellows, the highest rank within the IEEE. Currently, about 2% of the membership holds the Fellow rank.
