Project: Visualizing Profit for a Non Profit: The Goodwill Example

Please visit Goodwill Columbus to lean about their charter, Òbusiness modelÓ, and the role they play in the community.

Prologue:  The narrative/business case for the data visualization exercise is that we are interested in being able to see at a glance the profitability of the homes in which Goodwill provides home/personal care services.  They also want to understand the elements that drive profitability Ð i.e., billing revenue, labor and other costs. This information would help Goodwill to monitor our homes from a financial perspective, as well as identify over-utilization or under-utilization of authorized hours of service. Below is a list of salient variables/factors

_      Profitability by Location (Revenue Ð Expenses = Profit)

_      Labor Hours by Location

_      Labor cost per hour by location

_      Hours Billed versus Hours Worked

_      Overtime Hours vs Regular/OSOC Hours

_      Billable Hours (Reg/OSOC) vs Non-Billable Hours

Data: All of the information that is needed in order to execute on this business case is available here.

Deliverables: It is required you to create visualizations which display patterns or trends impacting profitability. The clients are households that are served and costs are for ÒhumanÓ providers over a period of service. If there any specific questions, Ivy Freeman of Goodwill Columbus will answer. There is no need for a user study as the results of the user study will be presented to Goodwill Columbus.

Finally, yes you need to submit code, a report (with results of the user study) and any material that is required to demonstrate the project. If you cannot show in person make sure you have slide-decks/videos, links to web sites, etc. And yes you make your deposit into a Carmen dropbox.
