Changes in student evaluation of teaching

For many years, we have using an instrument known as the SET (Student Evaluation of Teaching). This had been developed by the university many years ago. But in the last few years, a new instrument, known as the SEI (Student Evaluation of Instruction), has been developed and most of the programs in the university had moved to using this new instrument. The main advantage of the SEI over the SET is that it is much shorter and simpler; but that is disadvantage as well since it does not address many important questions.

After extensive discussions among a small group of faculty, followed by discussions in the full faculty, the department faculty decided to adopt a new, locally developed instrument that combines the SEI and a highly abbreviated version of the SET. After using the new instrument for a couple of quarters, the new instrument required further fine tuning. Full details are available. The new instrument seems to be working well.
