Changes in EC2000 Criteria (compared to the '99'-'00 version)

The major current and proposed changes (these are expected to be in effect for our evaluation in Au '05) in the EC2000 criteria, compared to what they were in Au '99 seem to be the following.
  1. Criterion 2: The term "objectives" now means "broad statements that describe the career and professional accomplishments that the program is preparing graduates to achieve".
(In the '04-'05 version, "objectives" was defined as, "expected accomplishments of graduates during the first several years following graduation from the program".)

Criterion 3: The term "outcomes" now means "knowledge or skills the students are expected to possess at the time of graduation from the program". accomplishments of graduates during the first several years following graduation from the program".

(Previously these two terms were not precisely defined in the Criteria.)

  2. Criterion (2d): Seems to be more specific about how the evaluation results are used for improvement; rather than saying "the results must be used to improve the program", it now says, "the results shall be used to develop and improve the program outcomes so that grads are better prepared to attain the objectives".

  3. Criterion 3: The Criterion no longer lists specific instruments such as student portfolios, alumni/employer surveys, or placement data of graduates. Instead, it just requires that there be an "assessment process, with documented results, that demonstrates that these program outcomes are being measured and indicates the degree to which the outcomes are achieved" (and that the results of the assessments are used to improve the program).

  4. Criterion (3c): has added "realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability" factors to the outcome concerning ability to design a system.

  5. Criterion (3h): has added "economic, environmental" aspects to the "broad education" outcome.

  6. Criterion 4: On the other hand, these factors have been removed from the capstone course criterion; that criterion now only lists "appropriate engineering standards" and "multiple realistic constraints".
