Ad-hoc feedback (on a range of items) from some CSE majors
1. (Sp '04) Some students met with Stu to express some concerns about the relation
between CSE 360 and ECE 567: The main problem seemed to be that EE 567
assumes material that is not covered in CIS 360, in particular on
topics such as interfacing to i/o devices; these are apparently
covered in great detail in ECE 265 (which is an alternate prerequisite
for ECE 567).
We need to look into this.
This is being addressed. Wayne Heym has made some changes (in Wi '05) to
CSE 360 so that students get some exposure to the machine used in ECE 265.
2. (Au '04) A CSE major met with Neelam and expressed some concerns:
- Students get little or no practice in using standard languages
such as Java, C, C++ in their courses [the kind of experience they get
in 459.xx is very limited]. Moreover, students get very limited
experience (until CSE 560) in developing complete programs from scratch.
All of this puts them at a big disadvantage when
interviewing for jobs and internships.
Maybe we need to seriously consider adding that extra course between
CSE 321 and 560.
- Different sections of the same course often don't cover the same
material or are very different from each other in the depth to which
they cover the material or in how the students are graded, etc. He
mentioned two particular example, CSE 677 and 625.
Course coordinators should be alerted to this.
- The computing facilities are poor (the machines are too slow
etc.)
The student was asked to get in touch with the Computer Committee and
express his concerns.
