Laboratory Assignment 2 -
Due: October 13, 2014
Total Points: 80 + 20 (bonus)
Objectives:
This project will expose the team to the following.
- Modeling objects like the minion.
- 3D Printing
The Minion
Tasks & Grades:
We construct a
scale-model of a minion.
- Use Blender (blender.org) to create a scale space model.
- Use the tools listed below to test the created minion.
- http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual/Modeling/Meshes/Mesh_Analysis
- http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Extensions:2.6/Py/Scripts/Modeling/MeshLint
- http://www.blendernation.com/2013/03/27/blender-2-67-feature-3d-printing-toolbox/
- A STL file will be generated for the best minion (will discuss this in class).
- It should be noted the volume of the minion should be around 0.375 cubic
inch with dimensions of 1 x 1 x 1.25.

- Some STL files - Find many minion models at http://www.thingiverse.com/search?q=minion&sa=
- A particularly normal minion is at http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:492346 (the image above).
- You can download the STL files and then view them in Blender or other viewers.
Team Logistics:
Each team member will generate a minion and these will be tested
against the above tools and the best one will be selected for printing.
Submission:
We will use Carmen to submit the STL files. Please submit these files and we will then send them to the printer.
Milestones:
Since deadlines come and go real fast, we would like to ensure that the class is in sync with us. So,
we will have code reviews on 3 Tuesdays. The first one will be about
making minions and second one is about "making" sure we will make real
scale models. The third one is not a code review but a demonstration of the printer and the print facilities.
