I am an associate professor (with tenure) and an endowed CoE Innovation Scholar in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at The Ohio State University (OSU). Before joining OSU, I was a visiting scientist at the University of Washington (2016), and received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of California, Santa Barbara (2015) and a B.S. in EEIS from the University of Science and Technology of China (2010).

Check out my awesome group!

I am looking for multiple highly self-motivated Ph.D. students and Postdocs (especially those from underrepresented groups), and also have interest in advising passionate master and undergraduate students, as well as hosting visiting students with strong records. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you are interested. OSU is ranked 24th in Artificial Intelligence and 19th in Systems by US News in 2022, and ranked 24th overall by US News in 2023! Note that no ranking is perfect and please consider multiple dimensions when choosing a program.

Research Interests

My research interests lie in natural language processing (NLP), machine learning, and artificial intelligence (AI), specifically, (1) building advanced natural language interfaces (NLIs) to texts, tables, knowledge graphs, relational databases and computer programs (a.k.a. question answering, semantic parsing, text-to-SQL, NL2Code), interactive and conversational AI systems; (2) large language model (pre-)training, evaluation and analysis as well as privacy issues around them towards responsible AI.
