CSE Computing Lab Environment: Getting Started
This document explains how to access the CSE Windows environment
— which you will use for this course in lab sessions and from
the CSE lab sites (see http://cse.osu.edu/cs/labs/).
First, some background...
- Accounts: CSE Computing Services maintains both a
Windows and a Linux environment. Most accounts are created and
managed automatically based on several factors, including appointment
status, major status, and course enrollment (e.g., students on a
waiting list do not receive accounts until they are officially
enrolled). Accounts for guests and Project 60 students are managed
manually; contact the CSE Help Desk in room 392 Baker Systems
Engineering for more information.
- Usernames: CSE usernames for all students are
automatically generated and typically are the same as your OSU
name.number.
- Passwords: The Windows and Linux environments use the
same password, and this password is the one you use for your OSU
name.number account, e.g., when entering Carmen. If/when you change
your OSU name.number password, it will automatically change the
password you need to login to the CSE department computers.
Logging In to Windows
You first need to login to Windows on a lab PC.
- To login, momentarily press and hold the control, alt,
and delete keys simultaneously. This will cause Windows to
prompt you for your account information.
- Click inside the "User name" box and type your OSU
name.number name here.
- Click inside the "Password" box and type your OSU name.number
password (the one you use when you log into Carmen).
- Press the Enter key to complete the process of logging in to
Windows on the PC in front of you.
Logging Out from Windows
This is very important! Make sure you always log off the PC
before leaving the lab.
- To log off, momentarily press and hold the control,
alt, and delete keys simultaneously. This will
cause Windows to display a screen with various options.
- Click on "Sign out" to log off the computer.
For More Information
Unlocking Locked Account
If for whatever reason your account is locked and you cannot log in,
you need to visit the Engineering Technology Services (ETS) Help Desk.
See for locations and how to
contact them for help. For security reasons, if you visit a service
desk location, you will need to bring a photo ID to get your account
unlocked.
Note that it is possible that your OSU name.number password may not be
complex enough for our systems to accept. The University's identity
manager will take passwords that the Microsoft account system, the one
that everyone uses if running a Windows environment, will not. So you
may have to change your name.number password to meet the Microsoft
requirements enforced on the CSE systems. (Go to my.osu.edu to change your OSU
password.)
